READING
The Outsiders
Our 7th grade class is currently reading S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. We will explore the reasons why some people try to hide who they truly are and what it means to be accepted and accepting in our society. We will also infuse selections of poetry into our unit to help us think about a person's identity and why it matters so much!
Students will analyze Robert Frost's poem, "Nothing Gold Can Stay," which Johnny references in Ch. 9 of The Outsiders: "Stay gold, Ponyboy."

WRITING & PUBLIC SPEAKING
During our first trimester, students composed and presented original speeches. They learned the difference between a topic and a stance, and strengthened their positions by using personal anecdotes and credible research as support. They also learned how to use gestures and posture to communicate preparedness, confidence, and credibility. They overcame a lot of fears and demonstrated their talents as successful orators!
Check out high school National Forensics League National Champion, Aekta Mouli's speech, "Off Balance, On Purpose." Students watched and analyzed her speech to figure out what makes great content and presentation!
